"Good evening, ladies and gentleman!" the television announcer brightly said. "Welcome back to the weekly cloud lottery event. We're about to unveil the lucky winner shortly. Good luck to everyone, and may The Cloud shine its golden rays on you."

week I / friday / may 25, 2007

"Finally, I'm on my street," I said, driving to my house after a long day of manual labor. "Hopefully, one of these tickets will relieve me from that mess of a job."
I glanced around the neighborhood, seeing everyone's houses mostly consisting of similar structures. Their houses are so nice. Fresh coat of paint. Neatly carved and polished wood and stone. Grass shined brighter than the emerald city and laid even and fuzzy like fur. Pavements fresh like a newly done hairstyle. Some of their houses have renditions. Some have additions. Some have multiple stories.
How come I don't have these things? Don't get me wrong, my life isn't the worst thing imaginable, but it should most certainly be better than what it is now. Sometimes, I can't help but have my mood turn cold whenever I see what others have going on.
After a couple of minutes, I pulled up in my driveway to my "lovely" house. "Please, let the golden rays of The Cloud shine the brightest on me," I said to myself, clinching and kissing the five lottery tickets I purchased an hour ago.
I opened the door and saw my seven year old son, Reign, sitting on the couch watching Tom and Jerry.
"Hand me the remote, Reign," I said. "They're about to unveil the newest lottery winner."
He handed it over and I changed it to the local channel to see the results.
"Okay folks, we're finally ready to unveil this week's winner to be blessed from The Cloud," the announcer expressed.
"Hey, honey," my loving and devoted wife, Rose, said to me, kissing me on my right cheek.
"Hey, sweetie," I responded. "I didn't see you come around."
"I've been standing here in the kitchen this whole time. You just came in the door and made an instant b-line to the tv to watch that dumb event like you've been doing for the past several months."
"I'm sorry, babe. No bad intentions. Charge it to my head, not my heart."
"All right, folks," the tv announcer said smiley, "hope you have your lottery tickets in order cause the numbers are......06......30......44......17......21......and the golden number is......09! Our week's winner is......Mike Blakely! Congratulations Mike! You know what to do. Get ready to be picked up and be blessed by The Cloud!"
"Damn," I said under my breath. I somewhat slammed the tickets on the living room table and headed outside to the front lawn to smoke a couple of cigarettes.
flick...
flick...
flick...
flame.
The inhalation of a cigarette can really take the edge off my brain sometimes. Especially when I have an "off" day.
I looked to my left and saw my neighbor, David Krinklesturg, putting the finishing touches on his brand new polished white stoned round water fountain in his front lawn. So nice. So shiny. So...much better than probably everything I own.
"Hey, Raven!" He said to me, sounding chippier than a school girl. "How's the family?"
"They're fine," I responded, probably sounding like a grumpy grinch. "How's yours?"
"They're doing swell. Hey, I finally got that water fountain fully installed. Whaddya think?"
"It looks nice, David. Birds are gonna have a field day in it."
"I hope they do. It cost me quite a bit to get this completed."
"Yeah, just like it cost you to add that sunroom to the back of your house nine months ago."
"Ha ha, yeah, that too, and that was a big money spender, but hey, the things we want in life are worth the trouble. Ain't that right?"
"......sure."
"Well, alright. Imma get back to my people and spend some more time with them. It's family game night. Have a good night, Raven."
"You too."
Krinklesturg...
Look at him. Throwing his fortunes in my face. Smug bastard.
Fed up with looking at his glory, I walked back inside and bumped into Rose in the kitchen.
"You okay, Raven?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine," I responded. "Why do you ask?"
"Cause of this...whole...thing you got going on with the lottery and The Cloud. I just don't see the point in trying to win anymore. You've been trying to win for the past several months and not even close."
"Yeah, because all of these 'outsiders' are moving into our state, making my chances smaller and smaller."
"Okay, but it's not like we're 'from here' either. You do remember convincing us to move across the country?"
"Yeah, but...whatever it doesn't matter. These transplants need to stop trying to mooch off of our good fortune."
"Our?..."
"What? It's not our fault California was blessed with this black and golden gift of nature. Ever since that cloud emerged from above late last year, for once, things life feels like it can turn around."
"Raven, our life is fine."
"Not to me. I don't like living like this. Paycheck to paycheck. Not being able to buy things for you and Reign. Hell, we can barely pay for the things we need. Some things we got to put on hold. Aren't we behind on a couple of bills?"
"Yes, but listen. Our situation may not be the prettiest, but we're fine. We have each other and a spunky kid that loves us deeply. We just have to take it day by day. And like I've said before, if you need me to get a full time job, I will get one--"
"No, Rose. You're doing more than enough. I feel bad that you got a part time job at the shopping center."
"Raven, I've told you many times that it's okay. I don't mind working. It's for the betterment of our family and it saddens me that you think that you have to carry the financial burden. We're a team, and we're going to make it through this world together as a team."
"...Maybe you're right. I don't know."
"I know I'm right. I don't want you to rely on that cloud. I never get good energy whenever I look up at it. Something about it feels...off."
"I don't get that when I see it."
"Of course you don't. You see the golden lining of it more than the black inside. Come on, let's go to bed."
"Bed? It's not that late."
"I know, but I got to get Reign to bed, and our show is about to come on, and it's a double header tonight. We gotta get cozy."
"It's more so your show, but okay."
"It's 'my' show, but you don't ever leave the room when it comes on."
"It's...tolerable."
"Mhmm, sure...you know, this is the episode where Brad and Krysta decide their future with each other."
"........I'm only coming to see how it ends."
"Mhmm. Go get the popcorn ready while I set everything up in the bedroom."
After a night of laughs, outrage, and confusion, Rose and I got deeper in the bed, trying to consume as much sleep as we could.

saturday / may 26

"Let's go, baby!"
"Run, boy. Run!"
"Go get 'em!"
Dozens and dozens of passionate parents and supporters screamed and shouted as the kids participated in the local city's flag football game. Reign plays on The Screaming Gophers, which is going against the Killer Bass. He's a wild receiver. The Bass are leading the Gophers, 20-13. 5 seconds left before halftime.
The Gophers' center snapped the ball. Reign, with all the determination and sweat running through his body, sprinted to the touchdown area. The QB took the ball and threw it in Reign's area. The ball bounced out of his hands and it ended up in one of the Bass players' hands, causing an interception. One of the refs blew the whistle for halftime.
"I thought I taught him better at catching the ball," I complained.
"It's okay, Raven," Rose said. "It's only halftime. There's still time left."
"I know. I would just hate for Reign to feel discouraged and give up early. You know how he gets."
"Hey Raven and Rose," Stacey and John, our local neighbors, said behind us.
"Hey, Stacey and John," Rose responded. "Has your kids' game ended?"
"Yeah," Stacey said. "Just wrapped up. They won by a touchdown at the last second. How are you guys doing?"
"Halftime. 20-13. Losing by 6."
"Oh okay," John spoke.
Stacey looked around the ballpark, then stopped dead in her tracks.
"Well, look-a-here look-a-here," she said. "Look at our buddy in a pair of shades, Mike Blakely, and he looks to be talking to some older man. I'm kind of shocked he showed up."
"Well, why wouldn't he?" I asked. "His kid plays too."
"Well, his wife was saying about a couple hours ago he went missing after he won the lottery."
"Well, that's kind of normal," Rose stated. "Everyone who wins goes into the forests, floats up to the cloud, and doesn't come back til typically the next day."
Curiosity massaged my brain enough to get up and stand next to Mike.
"What's going on, man?"
"Hey," he responded in a short, monotone voice.
"Saw that you won the lottery last night."
"Yeah."
"Well...how do you feel?"
"What do you mean?"
"Do you feel any different now that you're basically set for life?"
"I feel...uhh...umm..."
A single stream of blood runs down Mike's face from under his shades.
"Hey, man. Are you okay?"
"Hey, why don't you go lie down in my car," the other mysterious guy butted in. "I know it's awkward right now, but things'll get better in a little while."
Mike stepped out of the ball park to go to the man's car, stumbling around like a drunk man getting over his hangover.
"Are you sure he's going to be fine?" I asked the guy.
"Oh yeah," he responded. "Leaving The Cloud can be kind of uncomfortable and I know what he's feeling, so I wanted to help him out. I was one of the first few ones that won the lottery."
"Oh, really?"
"Yeah, man. And I won it on my first lottery entry."
"Interesting...uh, how did you feel when you won?"
"...like...a new man. Like a freshly shredded snake. Like a seed, blossoming into a powerful flower. Like a majestic butterfly being birthed from a cocoon."
"Oh...okay. Tell me something. How did you do it?"
"Do what?"
"How did you get the magic ticket to win?"
"Nothing."
"Really? You sure?
"Yeah. Why would I lie?"
"I don't know. It just feels crazy to me that you just so happen to win on your first time in one of the first few instances of the lottery."
"Hmph. Just got lucky."
"Lucky?"
"Yeah, man. I hope you get the same luck because once you get to witness and experience the magnitude and magic of The Cloud, you'll feel like a new man. I can't wait for more people to join in."
"Babe, halftime is over," Rose shouted. "They're getting back on the field now!"
"Hey, I gotta go," I said. "Thanks for the uh...talk."
"No problem, man," he said. "I really appreciated this conversation. See you around."
Lucky? Is that all he was? Just lucky? Is he being honest, or is he holding out on me? I don't know...I just wish some luck would run into me...

week II / sunday / may 27

"Good catch, Reign," I proudly said. "You've really been improving on your catching and throwing. Hopefully you can transfer this into the next game. You'd be an unstoppable force."
"Thanks, dad," he said back. "But when can we stop? It feels like we've been doing this for hoursss."
"It's only been 30 minutes. You wanna be the best player out there, right?"
"Yeah, I do, but could we at least take a break. Even my coach says we have to breathe every now and then."
"Ha, you know what? We can take a 5 minute one. Go grab our water bottles by the front door over there."
"Okay."
"Thanks, bud."
"Hey, dad. Could you get me the new cleats? Some of my friends on the team have them and they look so cool. Plus, I think mine are starting to tear."
"Uh, I don't know, Reign. I gotta figure some stuff out, so it's not a yes, but it's not a no either."
"Oh, okay. Is it because we're struggling with money?"
"Huh? Where did you hear that from?"
"From you and mommy when you guys were talking in the kitchen the other night."
"...You weren't supposed to hear about that."
"Are we gonna be homeless?"
"What? No. We're going to be okay, son. I promise. Your mom and I work very hard to take care of each other and you, and we're going to do whatever it takes, as long as it's in ours, and yours, best interest."
"I remember you saying that The Cloud is our way to the good life. Is that true?"
"It is, but I don't want you to worry about that. Just be a kid, and let your mommy and daddy handle everything."
"Well, how come The Cloud does what it does? Why is it here?"
"I don't think anyone knows why or how, but leave it to the government to turn it into a benefit for us, but don't think too deeply into it. Let's get back to practicing. I want the other teams to be scared when the ball is heading in your direction."
That feeling traveling in my body doesn't feel good. The realization that my son is aware of my struggles. I know how that feels from first hand experience, and I'd be damned if Reign goes through the same thing I did.

wednesday / may 30

"Why is this line so damn long?" I said to myself, waiting in line for more lottery tickets at a gas station. It typically takes under 10 minutes for me to be in and out. I've been waiting for over 30 minutes and I haven't even gotten in the door. It shouldn't take this long to scan and swipe some tickets.
A group of rebels stood outside the gas station, protesting against the lottery.
"The lottery is evil!"
"Leave The Cloud alone!"
"All that glitters isn't gold!"
These people are out here almost everyday saying the same old shit. They don't have anything else better to do?
"Hmph, what's going on, man?" a familiar voice said behind me.
I turned around and it's that same guy who was with Mike the other day. He kind of took me by surprise seeing him here.
"Oh, hey, man," I responded. "I didn't know you were behind me."
"Yeah. I kind of noticed you from behind so I figured I would just say hi. Hmph, that's kind of funny to me."
"What is?"
"That guy right there. The third one from the left with the blue shirt on. I remember him. He used to practically live in this line. Now, he's one of those rebels. Too bad. He had real potential."
"Hm. Curious...why are you in line? Didn't you say you already won?"
"Yeah, I have. I'm just here to get some snacks and chit chat with some folks. Sometimes it's nice to walk around and see people like y'all."
"People like us?..."
"Well, you know...average folk. People outside the village. It's nice sometimes to get out and explore, but I could ask you the same thing. I didn't think I would see you here. You seem like a guy who got it all together."
"Hmph. If only that was true..."
"Well, what's going on?"
"Oh, it's uh...nothing crazy...nothing that really needs to be spilled over..."
"Oh, you can tell me. I know you don't know me that well, but rest assured you that I am available to talk about anything. I don't think we know each other's names. My name is Charles. Charles Chaston."
"Raven Roman."
"Well, Raven. Here's my number. Feel free to conversate with me about whatever. You could even get some advice on winning. I'm kidding, but no pressure, though."
His phone started to ring.
"Hey...what's going...what do you mean he's trying to le--...okay, okay, don't worry. I'll be back in a flash...okay bye. Hey, Raven, an emergency just came up, so I can't stick around, but good luck on the pickings. I'm really rooting for your success."
"Thanks, man. I really appreciate it."
Charles walked away from the gas station, eventually fading away into the bricks and blocks of the city. Part of me feels sort of eerie about him, but part of me is intrigued, and I really don't know why. Maybe I should talk to him more. I know he said there's no strategy when it comes to winning, but maybe being around him more often might rub some luck off me.
I bought ten tickets, headed home, and knocked on some wood, slowly waiting for the lottery event to come back this week.

friday / june 1

"Alright folks," the announcer said on the tv. "We're about to announce the new weekly winner. Get your tickets ready."
The nerves in my body are doing the sha bop doo whoop. Will tonight be the night? The night that all my problems go away?
"Babe," Rose said. "Can you help me with this bottle?"
"In a sec, Rose," I responded. "They're about to reveal the new winner."
"Ok, folks," the announcer said. "Good luck, and may The Cloud shine its golden rays on you. The numbers this week are...02...09...24...08...36...and the golden number is...78. This week's winner is...Rando Merlin. Congratulations to Rando! Go on ahead and get your blessing, sugar!"
"Hmph. Oh my God," I groaned. "Come on, man!"
I quickly flicked the tickets on the table and swiftly walked outside onto the lawn. I reached into my jean pockets to smoke another cigarette, but I couldn't find any.
This just doesn't seem fair. How come I'm not the one whose name is blasted on everyone's T.V.? How come it feels like everyone else is luckier than me? Is there something wrong with me?
"Raven," Rose said behind me, startling me. "You good?"
"I'm peachy, Rose," I sarcastically responded. "Everything's ice cream and candy."
Rose sat down next to me on the front lawn.
"Look, Raven. We need to talk about this obsession."
"Obsession?"
"Yeah. This whole cloud situation."
"What are you talking about? I'm not obsessed with it."
"Yeah, you kind of are. You've been trying to win this lottery thing for several months and it's affecting you in a way that's really starting to concern me."
"Affect me how?"
"You started buying one or two tickets. Now you've been buying 5 or more and it's increasing with every trip to the gas station. It also feels like you're ignoring or neglecting us sometimes. Sometimes around the house, you mope and groan. I try to gain the courage to try and talk to you, but I always draw back."
"I'm fine, Rose. Trust me. You don't need to worry about me."
"Yes, I do, Raven. You're my husband of 9 years. Why wouldn't I be? I'm just worried that this cloud might be affecting your reality and family relationships. I admire how much you've put into this family. You've been doing the best that you can do, but I am here as well. I'm willing to put in the weight too because we are a team. We became one from the moment we got married. You don't have to carry this burden alone. This lottery cloud thing isn't worth it. You've been spending a lot of money on these tickets and they're starting to pile up on us. Please honey, for the sake of all of us, let this thing go."
"You don't understand Rose--"
"Yes, I do. You want to be able to support not only our needs but our wants and desires. You're tired of struggling. What I need you to see is that The Cloud is bullshit. It's just an empty promise created by the government just to get you to spend more money. You have greater chances of getting a promotion than you would winning that. Hell, how do we even know the people who won really won?"
"I'm pretty sure they have, especially considering the fact that all the winners move to the Laus Amplexus Village, and you don't hear any complaints from over there."
"Who knows what they do over there. They're probably some weirdos. You see how they get after they win. Look, babe. I feel like you're starting to act like your father."
"What? What do you mean?"
"Remember when you used to tell me the stories of your father and how he used to act when he was in and out in the casino--"
"Of course I do, but I don't really wanna talk about that."
"But do you hear what I'm trying to say? I see you turning into your father and I feel like I need to stop you before it's too late. And you already know how my family is with money. That's why I kind of distanced myself from them. You would think being born into a pretty wealthy family would be good but not for me. Growing up, it was hard seeing them constantly argue and fight with each other. I knew as a kid that when I grew up, I would rather have a 'broke' but happy family than a rich one that's in constant money wars."
"Rose, I'm not turning into my dad. We're not going to be like your family. I'm fine. Everything's fine. Don't worry. I'm not obsessed. You have nothing to fret about."
I gave her a kiss on the top of her head, and walked back inside the house.
".........dad?" I said seeing him hunched over the bathroom sink, looking like a homeless man on the street.
"Raven, my strong lion," he stammered like a crackhead looking for another fix. "Come here."
He took me in, touching me sporadically.
"Are you okay, dad?"
"I'm fantastic, son. Never been better. Listen to me. I...have failed this family. I'm sorry I couldn't provide the life you both truly deserve, but things are about to change soon. I know life might get complicated for a while, but please listen to me when I say this. I love you, and nothing will ever change that. Don't let anyone tell you differently. Everything I have done and will do is for the betterment of this family. I want us to win. I want you to win. I want you to be able to take care of your future wife and kids. I want you... to live the golden life."
"Let's go, Raven," my mom interrupted, yanking my arm. "Roman, I'll be back in a few days after the divorce papers are finalized."
"Don't worry, Raven," my dad wept. "Everything will get better from here. The things we want in life are worth the trouble. Be the strong brave lion I've raised you to be."

Am I seriously turning into my father? Am I really going down the same path?
After staring into the mirror of memories, I washed my face, brushed my teeth, and headed to the bed where my wife is already fast asleep.
A low, rumbling sound fills the outside of the night sky. I looked outside from the window to see The Cloud glowing like fireflies, feeling like it's taking pleasure in taunting my misfortunes.
Listening closely, I can hear the winner's voice fill the hours of the night. Every week this happens, constantly reminding me of its presence. Sometimes, it's hard to make out their voice. I can't tell if they're having a thrill ride on a rollercoaster or if they're being stabbed by a serial killer.
There have been so many nights where I would sit and stare at this entity for hours upon hours upon hours upon hours. I don't know why, but I can't help but look out my window and gaze at this gold and black puffy spectacle. I don't know specifically where it came from, and why it came here, but I do know its purpose and possibilities, and it's powerful. I'm also curious about people's first thoughts and questions when this thing came into their lives. I wonder how the government was able to not only "tame this beast" and have this system working, but was able to monetize off of it...
A glowing pair of golden eyes appear in the dark crack of the bedroom door behind me, startling me. I quickly turned around and the eyes vanished into the darkness.
What the hell was that? Did an animal sneak into the house? Could it have been something...else?
I slowly peeked around the dark, cold hallway from the door.
I saw nothing.
I walked down the hallway a little and opened Reign's door. Seemingly sound asleep. No forced way of entry on either his door or window. I checked around his room.
Nothing.
I looked all around the house, but everything is still in place. Not a single thing looking either damaged or missing. Nothing else is here. Was I imagining things? Were the eyes real?
Trying to calm my nerves down, I went back into the bedroom and laid down in the bed.
A series of heavy footsteps banged against my eardrums, creating a path out to the front door.
I quickly sat back up, more concerned.
"Hmmmm, babe," Rose mumbled. "Are you okay?"
"It's fine, Rose," I replied. "Just lay back down. I'll be right back."
Grabbing my bat, I sped walked outside to the front. I frantically scanned the dimly lit neighborhood, trying to spot anyone running around.
I spot someone in a dark cloak running down the end of the street.
"Hey, you!" I shouted running after them. "Stop right there! What the hell were you doing in my house! Hey! Hey!"
Quickly catching up to them, I put my hand on their shoulder and they turned around and they blew some golden dust into my eyes, causing me to lose sight and drop my bat. I tried to wipe it away but it feels like it's stuck on me like glue, eventually irritating my eyes. I stumble back some and step over the bat, making me trip and fall on my ass.
I soon after began to feel dazed and dizzy, feeling like I just finished a spinning carnival ride. The cloaked figure soon began to walk slowly towards me. I tried to back away as much as I could.
"Get back, man," I stumbled to say.
Soon after, 10 pairs of similar golden eyes emerged from all corners of the shadows, all in concealing black cloaks. All 11 of them walked towards me, forming a circle around me.
They revealed their arms and extended their hands, trying to touch my head.
My body feels icky and my mind is spinning in merry-go-rounds.
I can feel their body temperatures sharing the aura of mine, covering me like a wet dirty blanket.
I don't know where to go. I don't know what to do. What are they trying to do to me?
I spun around in a ghostly panic, constantly seeing the same darken figure with golden, intriguing eyes.
I noticed one of the hands has a weird subtle version of a sun imprinted on their palm as they quickly connected to my forehead like a plug to an outlet.
Vision transitioned to a sheet of snow. Sound began to muffle.
saturday / june 2

I quickly jumped up and was partially blinded by the sun's rays dancing around the bedroom. I realized I was in my bed.
What happened last night? Was that a dream? Was that real?
I walked out the room and spotted Rose and Reign in the living room, finishing up on a puzzle together.
"Hey, honey," she said. "Are you okay?"
"Uh, I think so," I responded. "Do you know what happened to me last night?"
"Yeah, you told me to go back to bed. After some time, I heard you yell and I got up, concerned. I went outside and found you in the middle of the street knocked out it seemed. I had to drag you all the way back inside. Boy, were you heavy. Why were you on the ground? Did you get into a fight or something?"
"Uh, not really. I remember some figures around me and dust, I think, and...the sun...?"
"The sun?"
"I don't know. Things feel a little fuzzy, but I could've sworn someone was in our house, watching us."
"Uh, okay...you sure you weren't drinking last night?"
"What? No...You think I just walked outside for GP?"
"I don't know, babe. You've been acting funny lately, but we can discuss it later. Reign and I were about to start another puzzle. Care to join us?"
"Yeah, dad," Reign said. "Come join us."
"Hmph, yeah I will. Scooch on over."
So it seems last night was real. Who were those people...and why were they spotting for me?

week III / monday / june 4

My back has been killing me lately sitting at this damn desk for the past few hours. Seeing nothing but numbers on this screen is making eyes go cross eyed. Ever since the other night, my head has been pounding like a mad man. It's kind of difficult to really focus on my work.
The back of my ear tingled as I started to hear some people in the breakroom, talking about the new lottery winner.
"Yeah, he just moved into the village."
"He's about to live it up. I already know."
"I bet he's glad he doesn't have to work this dead end job anymore."
"I wonder what's the first expensive item he's going to buy."
"Hope he comes back and tells us about his new life experience."
Hearing them talk about that guy makes my stomach turn. That should be me. Why isn't it me? Why is it never me?
I slammed my hand on the desk, causing a very loud noise to fill the air.
"Hey, Raven," one of my coworkers said. "Are you okay?"
"Uh, yeah," I quickly responded. "I'm fine. I'm about to go on my break. See y'all in an hour."
I typically take my lunch an hour or so later, but I just needed to get out of that space.
I sat on a bench in a nearby park, trying to eat my sub sandwich, cheddar chips, and bottle of water, but I couldn't even enjoy my lunch, so I ended up just packing it back up.
I slowly rubbed my hands down my face, let out a huge breath, and held my head up, staring at The Cloud. It feels like everytime I look at it, the more energy is being sapped from me.
"Hey, stranger," someone said to me.
I looked down and spotted Charles, standing oddly close to me.
"Hey, man," I spoke back. "How have you been?"
"I've been doing amazing. May I sit down?"
"Uh, yeah. Sure."
"So, how have you been since we last met?"
"Um...I've been......doing fine."
"Hm. Are you sure? You don't sound like it. Also, you don't look the best. No offense."
"No, you're right. I know I look like shit. I honestly feel like shit."
"Well, what's going on? You can talk to me. I don't want to feel pushy or anything, but from the few interactions, it feels like you're masking away from your true feelings. I'm here for you, man. I don't want you to feel like you're fighting alone in this. I used to struggle extremely hard when it came to talking about my feelings. I had no one around and it took me a long time to find a way to express how I feel now. I hated that feeling and if I would love to help someone else, especially another man, so they can avoid suffering in silence."
".........Charles......am I...a bad guy?"
"What do you mean?"
"......For the past several months, I've been trying so hard to be in a better position, for my family to be in a better position. I've sacrificed so much for them. I've worked so hard at my job just to get us by, but a lot of the time it feels like everytime I take a step forward, something takes me four steps back. That cloud up there feels like my only ticket. I've put so much into trying to win, and I don't know what else to do. I know you said you were just lucky to win, but there's got to be something out here that you know could help me. I don't know if other people have asked the same from you, but if you do this one favor for me, I promise you I will forever be in debt to you. I will do anything."
"You've been very interesting to me since our first conversation, and I can really feel your pain. I can tell you're a hard worker, but in a situation where you feel trapped. I can't precisely say a method that'll guarantee anything. There was this one guy who did this challenge to try to increase his chances."
"Tell me. What did he do?"
"He lit his grass on fire in the shape of The Cloud, lit his hands on fire, and danced around the shape."
"What the hell? Why would he do something like that? He could've died."
"Yeah, I don't know what made him think that'll work, but ironically, he won the lottery after that."
"Really?"
"Mhm. I doubt that stunt affected the results. He did have to go to the hospital for a week."
"That's crazy. I want to win so badly, but I don't know if I want to juggle with my life like that. The cons seem like it weighs more than the pros."
"Yeah...It's crazy how a lot of people that I've met don't think like that. It reminds me of my mom. When it came to financial decisions, she didn't really flesh out the pros and cons. One time, she thought it was worth it if she bet her whole life savings during an underground horse racing match. She lost and didn't want to pay up. The people she owed got to her and...took her out. We couldn't even recover her body."
"Oh wow...I'm sorry to hear that, Charles."
"Oh, don't be. I'm fine. I've fully accepted the situation. I just wish she would've put more thought into it.
"Your situation reminds me of my father. I wished he would've thought about things more before..."
"Before what? What did he do, if you don't mind me asking?"
"......When I was seven, I was visiting my dad at his place. He was acting weirder than usual that day. He would randomly start crying and mumbling things to himself. I wanted to ask questions, but I was too nervous to say anything. My mom was on her way to come get me. I vividly remember sitting on the front steps playing with a yo-yo. My dad walked out and kissed me on my forehead. I felt some of his tears melt on my forehead. He told me everything will be better now and he loved me. He handed me a letter, got in his car and......next thing there was a fire and an ambulance. After the funeral, my mom found another letter from him telling us to not weep about him and to take the money from his insurance policy and make something big of our lives. I didn't really understand the whole situation at the time, but things feel a tad bit clearer now. Sometimes, I want to spit on his grave. Sometimes, I wish I could hug him and let him know that he did his best. My wife thinks that I'm gonna turn into him if I keep trying to win, but I'm going about it in a totally different way. I'm not like him, and I never will be. I love her to death, but it hurts to hear her talk to me like that. She makes me feel like a terrible person, even though I'm trying to look out for her and our child. Am I really wrong for that?"
"Of course not, and don't worry. You're going to be okay. You know how many people I've talked to who have done the craziest things to make it in life? I literally just told you about a guy who lit himself on fire. You know what you guys have in common? All of you want to taste that sweet American dream, and there's nothing y'all won't do in order to claim it. Nothing's wrong with that. So, no. You're not a bad person. You're determined, so keep doing what you're doing, and that life you're owed, will come to you faster than you know it."

*beep beep* *beep beep*

I looked down and noticed my alarm on my watch was going off.
"Oh shit," I said. "My lunch is almost up. Hey, I have to get back to work, but thanks for the talk."
"No problem, Raven," he said. "I really like talking to you."
"I do too. It feels nice to talk to someone who understands you."
"It always does. See you around. Feel free to talk to me anytime. I'm always here."

I really appreciated that conversation I had with Charles the other day. He reassured me that I was doing the right thing. I know Rose thinks it's trouble, and I know she loves and cares for me, but I think that reward is greater than the headache. I don't think she truly understands the situation at hand. This magical cloud has come into our lives for a reason. I feel like I'm so close to winning, I can practically eat and digest it. I can already imagine it.
I watch the lottery event tonight. The t.v. announcer says the winning numbers and my lovely name gets displayed shiny and large across the screen. I jump up and down in pure excitement, and Rose will say, "Oh, Raven! I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have doubted you. We finally did it!" She'll join in jumping with me and then Reign will say,"We did it, dad! We don't have to worry about money anymore!" He'll join in too and we'll all skip and hop down the golden brick road to riches and tranquility.
I pulled up to my house with twenty tickets in hand, clinching them to me tighter than a corset to a body. It might seem excessive, but yet it feels so necessary. I'm really feeling the energy. Today has to be my day. It just has to.
"Okay, peoples," the t.v. announcer said. "Get them tickets lined up. The numbers are about to roll in. Sending luck to all participants. The numbers are...24...25...78...74...47...and the golden number is...07! Our week's winner is......Kenoshi Renslayer! Congrats sis. Go receive that cloud's magic."
I lost...again. Again? Why? I just don't understand why. What is keeping me from winning?
"While we celebrate our new winner, Kenoshi, let's laugh at all the losers out there, especially Raven Roman. He's attempted so many times, yet he keeps losing. Poor baby. Better luck next time, you fucking failure."
Sounds of laughter jumped out the t.v. and poured in the living room, increasing in volume with every 'ha' escaping her lips.
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha
"GOD DAMMIT!!!" I yell, punching the wall, creating a hole.
"Raven...," Rose softly spoke behind me. I turned around and saw her standing at the front door with Reign.
"Reign, go to your room and close your door. I need to speak to your father really quickly and then we can play your new video game."
Reign ran to his room and shut the door.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" she quietly snapped at me. "Have you gone mad?"
"Rose," I said. "Let me explain--"
"Explain what? The fact that you're over here damaging the walls because you're chasing some fucking fantasy when you're completely aware that the chances are slim to none. Raven, I've been trying so hard to understand you, but it's wearing me thin. Every week, I have to see and hear you grunt and groan and moan about this stupid cloud and how miserable you are. You're OBSESSED! Do you even know how much money you've been spending on tickets? Hundreds. That money could've been spent on our late payments or fixing something around the house. I've been patient throughout this whole time, but it's draining and I didn't want to hurt your feelings, but you left me with no other choice. Either you give up this unrealistic 'dream' of yours...or you're going to have to chase this dream by yourself."
"Rose......you can't be serious right now. I'm so close to making it and you're giving me this ultimatum? I'm doing this for you guys!"
"I don't think I believe that anymore. It more so feels like you're doing this to look good in front of others. Raven, I don't like fighting about this, and I definitely don't like Reign being around this. If you care about us the way you claim you are, then please...please listen to me and let this go. Your family is more important than that cloud. We're going to be okay. We don't need some entity for us to win. We already have. Stop focusing on this cloud and be here in these finite moments with us."
".....................alright, Rose. Fine. I'll let it go."
"You promise? I don't want you to just tell me what I want to hear."
"No. I'm serious. I don't want you or Reign to feel anything other than happiness. You guys are my whole world. I wouldn't know what I'd do if I lost y'all. I remember that pain I felt when my parents split up, and I left with her, seeing my dad stare at us like his heart was stolen. I don't want to put you guys in that situation. I'll let it go, and focus more on us."
"Thank you. Trust me, Raven. It's for the best of all of us."
I know that I should feel confident in what I just said, but I can't help but feel this sickening pain in my stomach. Yes, I would hate to give up on my goal when it feels closer to me than ever before, but I hate disappointing my family. I love them, and I love the life that brings the best out of them. Why am I so conflicted? Why do I feel pulled from different sides? I just wish I can have both merge together in happy matrimony...

ello ello! :)
i just wanted to put this out there as a disclaimer just in case.
this story does describe a good bit of violence, coarse language, and does mention a few implications of suicide so please proceed with caution.
i don't think there's anything else, so hopefully you enjoy my latest short story.
here's 777.
week six / monday / june 25

It's been a few weeks since I tried to let go of The Cloud, but its grip on me is tighter than braids. Its awareness of me sends chills down my spine. It hovers over me like trees whenever I leave my house. It follows me. It stares at me, judging me for the life I'm living. It's hard to ignore something that always makes its way to remind you that it exists.
Nights are the hardest, considering its colors stick out in the night sky. I swear it feels like it's talking to me, mocking me, putting me down. I haven't been able to get much sleep. It doesn't help when I walk about and hear people talk about the new winner every week, and it's not me. I've been having that weird feeling of being observed and studied for a month now and it's driving me insane. I don't know if that incident a month or so ago has made me paranoid, but that feeling hasn't left me.
I still keep watching who wins the good life, secretly though. I can see how unhealthy that can be for me, but I can't look away. Everytime they announced a new winner, my head sank lower and lower into my body.
To add insult to injury, David Krinklesturg won last week. As if this man can't do anything worse to annoy me, he does that. It's kind of perplexing that he entered the lottery system. I assumed he was well off, considering he's been making more additions and shit to damn near all aspects of his life.
Also, these bills haven't been giving me the best time. Something happened to our pipes, which has caused our bathrooms to not work properly. I still have to fix that hole in the wall I caused. I also gotta pay a $1,200 medical bill for my son catching a skin infection on his leg last week.
I feel like a colossal tsunami, just waiting to be released onto the world.
I've tried to get a promotion, and get a second job, but both resulted the same. Failure.
As much as I want to keep appeasing Rose, my options feel nonexistent, and my sanity is an unwinding thread.

friday / june 29

During my lunch break, I went back to the bench at the park to eat my food. Sometimes, no matter how much food I ingest, my body will always feel hollow.
"What's going on, stranger?" Charles said, approaching me.
"Oh, hey Charles," I responded in a low tone. "How come we keep finding each other so much?"
"Small world, man. It's been a while since I last saw you. You haven't been showing up to the gas station to get any more tickets. Are you giving up?"
"Yeah...not necessarily by choice. My wife gave me an ultimatum a while ago and I've tried to convince her, but she wasn't budging. I would love to give it another go, but...there are people and things that I can't afford to lose."
"Huh...well that sucks. I've been rooting for you this entire time we've known each other, and I would hope one day she'll understand. Hey, why don't I take you across the lake to see the village."
"What? Really? Oh I don't think I c-"
"Oh, nonsense. You can take this time to take a peek at something others would kill for the opportunity. Trust me. You'll be fine. You're going to love it. It'll really cheer you up and take your mind off of all your problems for a little bit."
"...oh what the hell. Let's do it."
Something in the back of my mind says that this is a bad idea, but I think my mind's playing games with me. I won't be out long.
We went inside Charles' car and headed towards the village.
Soon after, we drove along the bridge and arrived at the front gate of the village. Even that is a golden beauty to witness.
Charles leaned his head out of the window, scanning his eyes.
"What's that for?" I asked.
"It's a Retina ID scanner," he responded. "It gets us inside."
"That's some pretty advanced technology."
"Yeah, I know. When you're in a certain position in life, you're able to get access to things the public may not be able to get yet."
The gate opened and we entered inside.
The village is everything I expected it to be. Multiple story grand houses. Fresh cut even emerald green grass. Clean pavements. Luxury cars. Digestible oxygen. I can even smell the extravagant price tags from the stores.
I can almost cry.
"Well, what do you think?" Charles asked me.
"...i...i...i...it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen," I responded.
"Hmph. I'm glad you like it. Do you want to see my place?"
"Hell yeah!"
We pulled up to his mansion and it almost makes the other ones feel like a common generic home from my neighborhood. Tan colored brick pavement. Avant garde outside water fountain. Neatly and custom trimmed hedges of The Cloud. Triple story home. Gold house trimmings. You can also see the magical entity floating in the sky behind his lovely estate.
"You really live here?" I questioned.
"Well, yes," he answered.
"Wow. I don't see how you spend so much of your time with us common folk. I would never leave this place, or this village."
"Ha. I can see what you're saying, but sometimes it feels good to see where I was at one point in my life. Humble beginnings, ya'know? I also like to be around the common folk so I can encourage and empower people to join our little society."
After taking me on a lengthy great tour inside his home, we sat outside on his master bedroom's balcony on the third floor, getting possibly the closest view of The Cloud. Gorgeous and mysterious as ever.
"Curious," I said. "How come your place is more grander than everyone else's?"
"That's because everyone essentially looks up to me," he answered. "I'm kind of like an unofficial leader."
"No disrespect, but how come?"
"None taken. Although I wasn't the first to win, I was one of the earliest. When I first transcended into The Cloud, I experienced something like no other. It felt like...reaching Mt. Everest and seeing that gorgeous, cinematic view. It felt like that feeling in your stomach when you hit that first big roller coaster drop. The Cloud is a once in a lifetime type of experience that everyone needs to go through. My words do not weigh anywhere near that first hand experience. While I was inside, I saw things that no one else had seen. It felt like The Cloud really took a great liking to me and showed me a grand vision. A vision grander than you and me. A vision grander than the universe we live in. It was only a handful of us after my transcendence, and considering no one felt what I did, I thought it was right to relay the messages it gives me and bring it to reality. I was the one who came up with this entire mini-society that only belongs to people like us. Thanks to my brother's position in the government, we were able to make my vision real and have the whole lottery system come afloat. Although we're still in the early stages, I'm working on some things behind the scenes that'll pay off in due time. I've done so much for this community, it just kind of came naturally. The people here are great. The environment is great. And it's all thanks to that lovely black and golden ray of hope and prosperity up there."
"Yeah, I bet it's great...being here..."
"Are you sure you let it go? It doesn't feel that way."
"I don't even know anymore. I've just been trying to not think about it so much, but it's been so difficult, especially being here in this village and in front of The Cloud."
"Hey, Raven. I really hope things will change cause you would make a great addition here. I can feel your ambition, your pain, your frustrations, and your drive. You deserve this life here. I really hope you reconsider. And yeah, the money's great and all, but the best part about this place is being a part of something bigger than you. Something that not only uplifts you, but benefits those around you."
"Help me, please sir!" someone moaned behind us. "I don't feel so good right now!"
I recognize him. Timmy Calbrone. He won last week. He doesn't look so good. He's coughing up blood. His eyes look like they haven't met sleep in forty years, seeing strain lines around them.
"I thought you said after a few days the se--"
"Hey," Charles sternly said. "Don't come up here like this. I have a guest."
"I'm sorry, sir. It's just this thing inside of me--"
"Hey! You're fine. Come with me to my private chambers. Hey, sorry, Raven. I'll be back with you. This will only take a few minutes."
"Oh, okay," I responded. "Is he going to be alright?"
"Yeah, yeah. He just...ate something bad earlier this week. He'll be fine."
Charles quickly rushed him and Timmy away. As they disappeared into the darkness, it appeared as if Timmy's eyes started to glow gold.
I almost startled myself. Was his eyes another color? Am I seeing things? It reminds me of that incident some weeks ago...
Maybe it's The Cloud's rays hitting his eyes and it's just a weird coincidence.
This cloud is brighter, considering this is the closest I've been to it. It's so beautiful.
So...majestic...
So...mysterious...
So...enticing...
Golden mist coming from The Cloud traveled down to me, wrapping around from my fingers to my arm, eventually entering my nostrils and my eyes.
My body instantly arose from the balcony and began to float up, higher and higher towards The Cloud.
Float.
Float.
Float.
Float.
The closer I get, the more my senses are enhanced.
Float.
Float.
Float.
Float.
My body feels better than has been since college.
Float.
Float.
Float.
Float.
It's calling my name, louder and brighter.
Float.
Float.
Float.
Float.
I'm a quarter of an inch from infusing with it.
I...miss you so much, my love.
"Raven?" Charles startled me.
My body jerked and I realized I'm still sitting in the chair on the balcony.
"Are you okay?"
"Uh, yeah, I think," I responded hazily. "Weird. One second I was here, staring at The Cloud. Next thing, I was so close to it, I could've touched it. Now, I'm back here...I don't know what's been going on with me lately. My head's been thumping like crazy. It feels like people have been stalking me. It feels like The Cloud's been teasing and taunting me. I'm seeing things that aren't real. I might be slowly going insane. Maybe I need to lie down or something, I don't know."
"You're fine, Raven. You're starting to sound like Timmy. You're experiencing things that are only playing in your head."
"But at some point, that line feels like it's crossing over into reality..."
"Raven. You're fine. You're not going crazy. Look. How about you go into a guest room and rest up for a while. I think you'll feel much better."
"That's okay. I can get some when I get home after wor--...holy shit! My lunch period! What time is it?!"
"...3:17."
"Oh my God! My lunch was over at 1! We gotta go. Take me back to my job, Charles."
We dipped into his car and drove out of the village. I can already hear my boss ripping me a new one.

After driving down the same path we took earlier, Charles made a quick b-line to a gas station.
"The hell are you doing?" I quickly asked him. "Take me to my job, right now."
"Listen, Raven," he said. "I know you said you are 'over it,' but from what I've seen, you are the furthest from it. I'd really hate for you to not at least give it one more try."
"Charles, I don't have time for this. I need to be back at my desk."
"I know, but don't you want to at least give it one more attempt? Out of all the people I've met, there's been none who's been more deserving of winning than you. You've worked so hard and I hate to see you give up when you're right there. Remember when you said earlier that you felt like you could practically touch The Cloud? That's your sign. It's telling you to try one more time. Don't stop digging in the ground when you're one dig away from discovering the gold beneath your feet. Look. If you buy one more ticket and you don't win, you're free to do whatever you want. You're free to leave this behind. I just don't want you to have that feeling of regret for the rest of your life."
"...Ugh, fine...I'll do it. I'll buy one more ticket. Anything to get to work faster."
"That's the spirit. Now go get that golden paper."
I feel kind of bad that I'm about to buy this again, but I can't help but feel a sense of satisfaction knowing one of these tickets are about to come back into my life.
After purchasing, I walked back to the car and he finally drove me back to my job.
"Thanks for the tour, Charles. I really appreciated it."
"Anytime, Raven. And listen to me when I say this. Tonight is the night. Trust me."
Charles rolled up his window, and drove off into the bricks and stones of the city.
Could he be right? Is tonight the night? Are the stars finally aligned in my favor?
*hours later*
"Hey, hey, y'all!" the t.v. announcer cheerily said. "Welcome back to this week's lottery pickings. We're only a few minutes from announcing the brand new winner."
My body is vibrating harder than a salt shaker sitting on this couch right now. I can't sit still. Just when I thought I seemingly left this dream behind, I've been brought back.
77 23 09 24 05 16
The ticket. This golden ticket. It looks...so...divine. So...gorgeous. So...powerful. My doubts weigh the size of an elephant, but maybe, just maybe, this single ticket can be the slither of hope that will outweigh everything. To be honest, tonight does feel different. Tonight might just change my life--.
"Raven?" Rose softly spoke.
Startled, I quickly tucked the ticket between the cushions. "Hey, babe. Hey, Reign. What have you guys been up to today?"
"Well, I took Reign to practice and did some errands...Reign, leave your dirt covered shoes here and go get washed up for dinner, okay?"
"Okay, mom."
"So, what have you been doing today, Raven?"
"Work...same old, same old."
"You sure that's all you did today?"
"...yes...why do you sound unsure of my answer?"
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe it's because of your recent gas station visit."
"...What? How...what are you talking about?"
"Raven, please don't lie to me. When I was out earlier, I drove past a gas station and I could've sworn I saw you there, and you didn't have your car, so what were you doing?"
"Nothing..."
"............nothing?"
"Okay, look. A friend of mines bumped into me during lunch and he took me over to the village, gave me a tour, and we talked for a while--"
"What? Why did you go over there? What was the purpose?"
"He insisted, and I figured it wouldn't be a big deal to look at what almost was."
"It's a big deal because of two things. One. You're putting your job at risk, and we can't afford to have you out of a job. Two. Being in that environment could trigger you to go back to chasing that fantasy again, which it seems like it is, considering you're sitting here watching that stupid program again."
"First. My job is fine. It was a mistake and it'll never happen again. Second. I'm fine. I am perfectly able to be around there and not 'get triggered.' I can also perfectly watch whatever I want and not go on the deep end. I haven't broken the promise, so relax and stop worrying so much."
"...okay, then. See you at dinner."
She walked off into the hallway, leaving some hot steam floating in the air.
That sentence didn't sit right in my stomach, but it's fine. On the inside, I'm crossing every body part, hoping that tonight is the night, and I can finally show her my dedication was worth it.
"Alright, folks, get your tickets ready, cause here we go! The numbers are...77..."
77...
"...23..."
23...
"...09..."
09...
"...24..."
24?!
"...05..."
05?!!
"...and the lucky number is...16!"
.........Did I just do it?
.........Did I just win?
.........Has all my hardwork and dedication finally paid off?
"This week's winner is...Raven Roman! Congratulations, Raven! Now, go get ready to claim your winnings!"
Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh! I...I-I-I did it! I fucking did it! I finally won! Everything I have done has finally come back to me! I'm so stunned, I can barely speak. My mouth is stuck on the floor.
My time has finally arrived.
"Wow...," Rose said behind me, "and you didn't want me to worry..."
"Rose," I calmly said. "Listen to me--"
"You just sat here in my face and told me to relax and stop worrying about you, yet here you are. A winner in this bullshit."
"Rose pleas--"
"Raven, I trusted you. After the many talks we have had, after what I told you about my personal experiences, and even after I gave you an ultimatum, you still went behind my back!? I...have done so much for you, Raven. I left a part of my life when you begged me to move us here, just to get closer to that thing up there. I allowed you to continuously drain our shared bank account buying those stupid tickets. I've tried to give you space and let you chase this fantasy, and the one time I ask something from you, you can't even do that."
"But Rose, I did it! We don't have to worry about anything anymore--"
"Does it look like I give a fuck about you winning right now?! Yes, I know we are barely above water, but I have my family, and that is what has always kept me pushing forward. You've become so obsessed that you've lost sight of everything around you. I don't care about being rich! I care about us being alive and happy!"
"Happy? Rose, I haven't been happy for years! I'm tired of the struggle card being attached to my wallet! This was the best opportunity and now I can finally exhale again. I can finally be happy!"
"...Well have fun being happy without us."
"Rose...for real? You can't be serious right now!"
"I gave you a warning, and you knew the consequences. I can't even look at you right now. I don't want to be involved in this and I sure as hell don't want Reign to be around this either."
Rose stormed off into the bedroom, trying to quickly pack some clothes in a bag.
"Rose please! I'm sorry! I honestly stopped but Charles was so encouraging and inspiring so I figured I might give it one more chance to see if it would work or not."
"You didn't have to partake in it, you know? To be honest, I'm starting to feel like you never let it fully go. I feel like you've been keeping it out of my sight, just so that you won't get caught."
"Rose, please don't go anywhere. Let's just cool off for the night and rehash this conversation in the morning."
"No. We already had this conversation. I gave you my expectations and you failed to meet them. I just can't deal with this right now with you, Raven. I love you so much, but I know what I will and will not tolerate. I just need to spend some time away from you and get my mind together."
"Rose, please don't go!"
"Raven, get off of me."
"Rose, I love you."
"Raven, let go of me."
"Rose, stop!"
"RAVEN! You know what? I don't need to grab any clothes."
Rose grabbed the car keys off the nightstand and went into Reign's room.
"Reign, let's go," she said. "We're going to spend a few days at your auntie's. Don't worry about packing anything, we'll get it later."
"Why are we going over there?" he asked.
"Because I said so. Let's go!"
She took Reign by the arm and they walked out the door.
"Is dad coming with us?"
"No. Your father needs some alone time to reevaluate what's important."
As they walked out, I fell to my knees and called out their names in a ghostly tone.
Reign looked back at me, shedding a single tear.
My vision blacked out as I started to hear the sounds of an engine starting and a vehicle peeling off on the road.
And just when I thought I gained something, in a second, I feel like I lost everything.

"...and he stood in front of the treacherous beast, ran towards it and stabbed it in the heart with his mighty sword," I said. "The beast took its wicked claws and swiped the king away, flinging him into a cliff and falling to the ground. The beast's blood stained the sacred ground of the land, causing it to lie down. As both bleed out, the king looked up at his queen and son and released a gentle smile, knowing that, although he was going to die, he slayed the beast and allowed his family to live on, and that was the most important thing to him. The end."
"That's such an odd story to tell Reign," Rose said. "He's only six months old."
"What's wrong with the story?"
"Nothing necessarily. It's just the ending. It feels kind of...grim to me."
"I know it's not the perfect happy ending that a lot of people would expect, but that's why I kind of like it. I also really like the king and what did for his family, because that's something I would do for you guys. As a man, and the man of the household, it's my responsibility to take care of you guys. You two are the most important things in my life and there's nothing in this world that'll keep me from keeping you guys safe."
"Both of you mean everything to me as well, but don't think that you have to go down this road of life together alone. We're one now. I am here to support you as you are here to support me. As long as we're united, there's nothing we can't conquer."
I woke up on the living room floor, with a pounding headache, and the front door is still wide open from last night. I looked down and noticed a subtle dirt track following up to me.
Was I dragged? Maybe it's Reign's dirty shoe tracks...
I tried to stand up, but pain and agony instantly released throughout my body. It feels like I was dropped from a three story building. Trying to look around makes my head feel fuzzy and dizzy. Why does my body feel this way? What else happened last night?
With the physical and emotional pain wrapping around my body like fabric, I walked around the house, but everything seemed fine. Nothing's out of place or appears missing. I guess I could be content that nobody robbed me, especially considering the front door was wide open, but with my mind resembling a freshly demolished home, I'm not sure how to act anymore.
I walked back to the front door and tried to close it, but the memory of my family walking out that door plays, stops, rewind, and replays again and again. It feels like my life is stuck on this endless loop and I can't look away.
The world around me is bleak and dull.
It doesn't even feel real. I keep going back to the rooms, hoping that Rose and Reign are still here, but the results remain the same.
The main people lighting my flames have officially left my life. I want to go find them and bring them back home, but I'm scared that I'll push them further than they already are. Me winning doesn't mean much if I can't celebrate that with the ones that matter.
The only thing I can do for now is lie on the couch, and let my light continue to dim, minute by minute.
It's only been 23 hours since Rose and Reign left our home, but with each minute passing like days, the sands of time are weighing like 23 boulders.
My mind can't let go of it, but maybe taking a step outside could help clear things up a bit.
I got up, put some clothes on, and went outside to take a walk around the neighborhood.
5 minutes in and I'm not feeling any better, mentally or physically. My body's still sore and my head's still a bowling ball.
I looked around the neighborhood and things looked fuzzy, as if the world was playing through a static tv. I looked up to see The Cloud in the orange flavored sky and, soon after, it began glowing in and out as the world started to dance like waves crashing into each other. I fell on one knee to keep myself from passing out. What the hell is going on with my mind? Why am I feeling like this?
"Raven?" someone said behind me.
I turned around and it's Charles. After realization, the world went back to normal.
"Are you okay? I was in the neighborhood and noticed you're walking like someone just ran over your cat."
"I just......I don't even know anymore," I moaned. "My family's gone...My body feels like shit...It feels like people are stalking me... I'm seeing things--I just don't know if I can do this anymore."
"Do what anymore?"
"...deal with life."
"Well, you finally achieved your goal and won the lottery the other day. Shouldn't you feel amazed?"
"I don't even know anymore...I imagined how I would feel when I was going to win for so long. I thought I would feel on top of the world, but now it feels like the world's on top of me."
"Listen, Raven. Everything will be fine. Your family will come back around---"
"How come you're so positive all the damn time? How can you be...so calm? I don't understand..."
"Because regardless of what comes out of life, I am part of something great and that something will always have me in a great sense of security, and now you're a part of it, so you have nothing to worry about anymore. You're basically set for life. Now that you've won, let's go back into the village."
"What? Why?"
"The celebration. For your membership into our little family."
"Uh, I don't know, Charles. I look and feel like shit and I'd hate to bring the energy down..."
"We're just going to have dinner with the community and welcome you and socialize. Nothing crazy. It's tradition, and plus, I think it'll help you clear up the fog you feel like you're seeing right now."
...oh what the hell...
"Uh, sure, why not? This walk didn't help at all, but maybe the dinner will."
"That's the spirit. Now, to the village."
As the distance between us and the village drew nearer and nearer, I couldn't help but have this weird feeling in my stomach and head. This low, dark, ominous sound wouldn't leave my ears for anything. I tried to ignore it as much as I could, chopping it up to the list of weird things I've been feeling all day.
We finally pulled up to Charles' mansion and the front is filled with luxurious egg colored cars. The residents came out of their cars in their solid off white colored outfits. Though the outfits vary from person to person, one thing remains: they all have gold and black cloud pins placed on the left side of their chests.
One of the rooms on the first floor is set for the celebration. Centered in the big and spacious room, the long rectangular decorated table already has the community seated with their food.
I sat down next to Charles' golden chair. Part of me feels out of place, mostly because everyone's outfit is so grand and I look like I haven't touched sunlight in days.
I looked to my right and noticed David Krinklesturg was sitting next to me.
"Hey...," I said to him. "How have you been doing?"
"I've been doing fine for the most part," he responded. "My body's been acting extremely odd these last few days, but Charles has reassured me it's all normal. How about yourself?"
"...I've seen better days."
"Hmm. I can't really see why you seem down. You're a winner now. Look at it this way. You and your family are set for life, and we're going to be neighbors again. So, cheer up, and enjoy your new life."
David gave me an odd smile, and proceeded to return to eating his food.
Before I could've processed anything, Charles entered the room, wearing a golden suit and duster. Everyone immediately stood up and faced toward him. I quickly stood up after realizing what everyone else was doing. Charles proudly walked to his grand chair. Everybody sat back down.
"Welcome, all," Charles said, "to our next weekly installment. This is a special night. After months of dedication and sacrifice, my newly acquainted friend, Raven Roman, has finally achieved the greatest achievement someone can possibly have. I don't want to make this speech long, but I can speak for myself and the entire community when I say this: Congratulations, and we can't wait for you to officially join our lovely family."
Everyone proceeded to stare at me and clap.
"Hey, Charles," I softly spoke to him. "I know this is supposed to be tradition and all, and I really appreciate this whole thing, but I'm not really feeling this situation. Can you take me back home? I want to be there waiting for my family to return."
"Listen, Raven," he said. "I understand, but please just ignore that for the moment. You're about to witness something only those in the room have seen before, and hey, guess what? When you officially move in, you're gonna get the second best house in the village. Up top!"
He raised his right hand up, asking for a high five.
I looked at his hand and noticed a weird sun imprint in the palm.
Huh...that's...odd. I've seen that before. I think I remember seeing it on that night when I was attacked by that group of people...
"How come you have that on your hand?" I asked.
"Oh this?" he responded. "This is nothing of your concern. Don't worry about it."
"...uh...if my memory serves me correctly, I saw this exact thing...when I was attacked..."
"Raven, stop worrying so much. Drop it."
......Was he?...Was he really?...He was...He was one of those people. He was there that night...
Before I uttered my next sentence, he stood up and said, "While we are welcoming Raven, we are also here for our previous winner, David Krinklesturg. As you all know, he won the lottery last week. He already went through the first two phases. Invitation and Transition. Now, on your last day, David, you're about to go through the third and final phase. Rebirth."
Rebirth...
What the hell is he talking about?
A few seconds rolled over and David stood up, looking physically uncomfortable. He backed up from the table, with ghostly eyes as innocent as snow. A gallon's worth of blood oozed from his mouth and onto the floor. His body shook back and forth for what felt like hours. Part of me wanted to help him out, but I didn't understand what was going on with him. He then turned to me, looking like a deer in the headlights and tears rolling down his face, and, in a desperate tone, said, "Raven......help me--"
In an instant, David began violently choking as one set of fingers clinged onto his top lip and another set clinged on the bottom one. David screams for help filled the mansion as his mouth was being forcibly expanded beyond his limit by the hands.
Soon enough, the sides of his mouth split wide open, spitting more blood towards us. The split extended down both sides of his body, bloodily unraveling like a garment seam.
Blood, bones, and organs sprayed the air and landed on various people and furniture like leaves during the fall.
I wiped my eyes and saw David standing there, but his skin was paler and his eyes glowed gold. The same type of eyes from the attack. He almost feels...hollow.
My body and mind's too stunned to even properly react. What the hell just happened to David?
I slowly turned to everyone and they had the most blankest, nonchalant expressions plastered on their faces. How could they possibly look like that after just witnessing some horrific shit?
I turned to Charles and he had a creepy satisfied expression plastered on his.
"Phase three...is complete," he said with a slight smile.
"What...what the hell was that?" I stuttered. "What's going on here? How can any of y'all look like that after seeing...this?"
"Rebirth, Mr. Roman," he answered back. "David needed to shed his earthly body in order to fully accept his new one."
"Huh...what are you talking about?"
"Phase one was the invitation. Winning the 'lottery' and accepting The Cloud's glorious gift into you. Once the seed is planted inside you, thus begins phase two. Transitioning. From initial insertion, you will experience various body changes and aches for eight days. On your eighth day, we all come together as a community and witness your death, and rebirth as one of us."
"...What...What have I gotten myself into?"
"Something sensational. Something that everyone will soon go through."
"...You...used me. You played me!"
"Now, Raven. How did I ever do that? The lottery is completely voluntary. You chose to participate on your own will. "
"I-I-I stopped, but you kept luring me in, enticing me and practically making me buy a ticket."
"It's still voluntary."
"Because of you, I lost the two most important people in my life!"
"Actually, you need to look into the mirror and see where the finger needs to be pointed at. I didn't force you to do anything. I saw from our first interaction your natural bloodthirsty hunger for winning. You really intrigued me, and I wanted to see how serious you were, so we had to watch you more, and my suspicions were correct about you. You feel guilty for not being able to fully provide for your family. You're tired of having your head barely above water. This life was your only reasonable way out. Now that, after months of trying, you've finally won, and you're more unhappy?"
"I wanted to live the big dream. I didn't ask for this!"
"Well, this is what comes with this lifestyle, and it's far too late to reverse anything, so why not just accept what will be your new reality."
"...Stay away from me. Don't ever contact me again. I don't want to be anywhere near you."
"That's fine, Raven. Because no matter where you go, we will always be there..."
Charles' eyes turned the shade of gold and walked towards me.
I backed up and ran out the house. I ran down the middle of the street and the village didn't look the same as it did entering it about an hour ago. The village feels darker, colder, and less magical.
My body's heavier than a boulder, but I gotta get out of here.
After some time, I ran into the village's town and dipped into the emergency room.
"Please! You have to help me! There's some crazy people out there trying to get me! They put something in me and you got to help me!" I quickly stammered out to the receptionist.
"Uh, could you repeat yourself?" she asked with a confused look on her face.
"What's going on here?" the doctor said coming into the lobby.
"Ma'am, you have to help me! I was tricked and now apparently there's this 'seed' inside me and you got to help take it out! Please!"
"Why would we do that? Once you accept The Cloud, you can't ever escape it, Raven."
Everyone in the room's eyes turned gold and walked toward me. I mushed one of them and ran out of the emergency room.
Standing outside was Charles and the rest of the community, staring at me with soulless eyes and the smile of an innocent child.
I ran towards the outskirts of the village and entered the forest.
Weird noises arose in the air. I quickly looked behind me and saw a plethora of golden eyes running towards me faster than a cheetah.
I eventually ran into the front gate and quickly decided to climb the ten foot metal fence. As I'm climbing, I can feel their body temperatures surrounding the lower half of my body. I reached the top of the gate and tried to jump off, but that's when someone's hand grabbed the hem of my bloody shirt, causing it to rip and for me to miscalculate my jump. I fell onto the other side, spraining my ankle and rolling down the hill and into the river.
The river's current carried my heavy body down the stream. As I'm floating down the river, the golden gate filled up with the community's golden eyes staring into the inner depths of my soul.
Everything hit me like a tsunami.
My body's heavier than the empire state building.
My mind's on a rollercoaster with no tracks.
Soon after, my body got stiff and everything faded to black.

week seven / sunday / july 1

I woke up and found myself on the lower edge of the hill, presuming I'm by the same river I was carried by last night.
My head is pounding like a mad man, and the sun's rays directly shining on me isn't helping.
I checked my body for any potential extra markings that could've occurred while I was knocked out, but it doesn't seem anything extra happened.
Looking at myself immediately brought me back to the events from last night.
I look like I've been run over and left for dead.
How could I have been so stupid?
I...let my obsession overcloud my judgment and now I'm doomed to become one of them.
How could I have been so blind? How could I have been so selfish?
I thought I had someone in my corner but he had his own motives.
Now with my family distancing themselves from me, I feel like a small fish swimming in the middle of all the major oceans combined.
After hours of wandering around, I eventually found my way back to the city. I stumbled into the local doctor's care facility, where my doctor mainly practices at. I went to him and explained everything from last night.
Silence filled the room like a thick hot gas.
"Well?" I asked him. "Aren't you going to say anything?"
"...I-I don't know what to say," he said. "What you're telling me is that The Cloud puts a seed in you, and that grows until it kills you, and it turns into another version of you, and those people are the people who live in the village, and it's also a secret cult that preys on poor people???"
"Yeah."
"...I'm sorry, but you sound completely insane. Are you sure you didn't just give off an alcohol binge or something? Also, why did you decide to come here?"
"Because I have a seed growing inside of me and I need you to help remove it from my body. I don't specifically know where it is located, but I'm pretty sure a good x-ray or something like that could help find it. I know I don't have a lot of money, but I will definitely pay whatever it is on a payment plan, and also we need to do this surgery this week because Charles told me it takes eight days for it to fully grow and kill me and I'm on day three so what's our next steps?"
"...I think I might need to recommend that you have to see a therapist. I know a very good one--"
"Ugh! You're not listening to me!"
"Raven, I've been listening to you rant and rumble for about an hour and a half. I don't know what to believe right now. Look, I've known you for years, and I like you, so I want to help you out and get you the proper help that you need. Now sit tight and let me go to my office and see if I can find her card."
As soon as he left the room, I hopped out of the hospital bed and walked out of the facility.
What I saw was real and no one will make me feel otherwise.
I walked all the way back home, still looking and feeling like a conjured up mess. The front door was slightly open, so I slowly checked around the house, but everything appeared the same as I left it, including the disappearance of my family.
I took a shower, put on some fresh clothes and laid on my bed, hoping I can get some proper rest.
Still images of my life presented themselves to my mind as if someone was presenting a slideshow to me.
My family.
The Cloud.
Charles.
The village.
Lottery tickets.
My mom and dad.
The Cloud.
My dad's dismembered face.
Charles.
My family.
Golden eyes.
Blood from the dinner.
The mansion.
The Cloud.
David exploding.
A wall of golden eyes.
My family leaving me.
Me slumped on the living room floor.
Me floating up to The Cloud.
My head splitting in half with multiple hands coming out of it.
Charles up very close, seeing his face in close detail.
I woke up and stood up in the bed, trying to recover my breath from escaping my weak body.
After a minute of recovery, I tried to get back under the covers, but my mind's too disturbed to go back to sleep. I got out of bed, washed my face, and went to the window and stared at the shiny pale crescent moon.
The moon started to slowly rotate and stopped, turning into a smile. Glowing golden eyes appeared on top of the moon, and it seemed like it was looking straight at me..
I quickly closed the blinds and the curtains. I subtly opened them back up and saw the moon looking normal again.
I heard the drop of a coin inside the house. I immediately turned around, with my heart rate increasing at a rapid rate. With my heart in my stomach, I slowly peeked my head around the door into the dark hallway. I see nothing.
I checked Reign's room. Nothing.
I checked the guest room. Nothing.
I checked the living room, dining room, and kitchen. Nothing.
The sound of a drop of coin is heard again.
Now my heart is in my knees. I checked through the various rooms again. Nobody's there and nothing's changed.
My mind couldn't fathom where the noise was coming from.
Is someone in my house again? Could it be someone from the village?
Trying to convince myself I'm imagining things, I walked back to the bedroom when I saw someone's silhouette, standing at the window with their back turned.
"There's nothing you can do, y'know?"
It's Charles...
"What do you want from me?" I desperately asked. "Why can't you leave me alone?"
"Because...you are one of us now. I can't abandon my people."
"I will find a way out of this."
He chuckled. "Yeah, sure. As if anyone outside of the village will believe you. You see how it went with your doctor. Seeing you explain everything to him gave me a genuine laugh."
"You need to leave. Now."
"Oh, Raven. Your mind's so disturbed. Why would I enter your house, when your mind is more welcoming?"
He slowly turned around and he had the face of my father's horrid face after the crash.
My body felt stunned. I haven't seen that face since the incident. Even at his funeral, when I stood in front of his closed casket, it was still there with a tight grip on my heart.
He rushed towards me and gripped my face, smiling at me.
Gasping for air, I closed my eyes. I opened them back up and he's gone.
Was he really there, or has my mind truly cracked?
I slid my back against the wall, and tucked my body inward and let my emotions escape my eyes.
I want to sit here and cry, but Charles and the village's potential appearance here frightens me more, so I eventually decided to grab my wallet, found a nearby motel, got in the room, and closed off the world as I curled up in a ball on the bed and let the darkness consume me, in the room and in my mind.

tuesday / july 3

I've been going back and forth to the bathroom, due to random vomit sessions.
What did I do to deserve this?
All I wanted was a better life for me and my family.
Was that too much to ask?
Now I feel like absolute dog shit for making the two loves of my life worry about me and pushing them to the point of leaving me all alone.
At times, it looks like my skin is glowing in and out.

wednesday / july 4

As if the headaches and sickness weren't enough, my back joined the pain train.
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?!?!
THIS IS NOT FUCKING FAIR!!!
I HOPE CHARLES ROTS IN THE LOWEST FLOOR OF HELL!!
FUCK THAT STUPID ASS CLOUD FOR EXISTING!!

I proceeded to display my anger physically by destroying and trashing the room.

thursday / july 5

My body feels like someone vacuumed all the remaining life out of my body and my stomach is killing me...
I've tried going to the doctor but he didn't believe me...
The people in my corner have left and I don't know if they'll ever come back...
I will do anything just for my life to get back to normal...

friday / july 6

One more day left...
One more day...
I've barricaded myself in this room for the past few days and I've officially cracked...
My mind's riding on an out of control, fast carousel...
I don't have many options left...
What is even the point anymore?...
I pulled up the strength to go back to the bathroom and when I looked at the mirror, I saw myself, but as a kid.
His ghost-like eyes stared directly into my soul.
"Remember," he said with a ghostly tone.
Those times where dad wasn't there because he was gambling...
...my mom taking me away from dad...
...my dad's tragic incident...
...my dad's last words and letter...
...those times where I tried to help mom pay for things...
...me watching my mom slowly die because I wasn't able to pay for her sickness...
...my first paycheck...
...marrying Rose...
...the birth of Reign...
...us as a family...as a unit...happy...
All of those come back to the forefront of my mind.
"I do."
saturday / july 7, 2007

This is it.
Today's the "big" day.
I'm officially ready to accept my new fate.
I put on a fresh new pair of clothes when a knock appeared at the door.
"Raven, open the door, please," a familiar muffled voice rose behind the door.
Rose...
"Raven, please. It's me, Rose. Reign is also here. Please open the door."
They're here...
I opened the door and it's them. I proceeded to touch their bodies and faces frantically.
It's really them.
"Rose, Reign," I said lovingly. "I've missed you guys so much. It's so good to see y'all again. How did y'all even find me?"
"We went back to the house Wednesday but you weren't there. Days went by and you still didn't show so I asked around and no one knew about your whereabouts. I tried calling but your phone's at home. I got the credit card statement in the mail today and saw the transaction from this motel so I came here. I did knock on a few wrong rooms, though."
"I'm just so glad you guys are here to see me one last time."
"One last time...what are you talking about? Look, I know we spent some time apart, but I want you to see your family face-to-face and really think about what's important to you at this very moment."
Looking at their faces brings me so much joy and happiness. I remember when I first laid eyes on Rose back when I first met her at the Grand Mall. Her chocolate covered eyes sparkled like the ocean during the night. I knew I wanted her then. Our first date was on the road. I just took her around the city. Crazy enough, the car ran out of gas in the middle of a bridge. While we waited for help, we got a good view of the city and spent the whole night getting to know each other. The best date I've ever been on.
I remember my face when Rose told me she was first pregnant. Words can't express the emotions I felt from that day till the day Reign came into our lives. I wrote him a five page letter that I was going to give him when he got older. When we came home from the hospital, I held him on the sofa chair and talked and talked and talked. It didn't even matter that he couldn't speak back. The eyes he inherited from Rose and his hand's tight grip on my finger said enough for me. From that day to this one, he's kind of been my second best friend. I'm so grateful that I have precious moments and achievements that I will never go away, from his first words, to his elementary school awards. I've always been there for him, for both of them, and I will continue to do so, even if I'm not here.
"Thank you both so much," I said.
"Huh?" she asked. "Thank you for what?"
"For reminding me what's truly important...taking care of you both."
I handed them both individual letters, hugged and kissed them, and tried to walk past them, but Rose grabbed my arm and said, "Baby...what's going with you? You're scaring me..."
"Everything will be okay, babe. I know that I haven't been perfect, but what's about to happen to me soon will be all for you two. Don't let anyone, or anything, try to tell you differently. Pretty sure Charles will fill you in later, but just enjoy the life that you both truly deserve."
"Raven, stop! Let's talk about this. Don't do anything you'll regret."
"It's already too late, Rose. Plus, I've gone through so many emotions the past week and some change. I've finally accepted what's to become of me. I'm okay with it, as long as you two don't have to struggle anymore. I love you both."
I tugged her off of me and walked down the stairs to the car and proceeded to drive to the village.
After a couple minutes of driving, I stopped at a red light. A car pulled up to the side of me and it's Rose and Reign.
"Raven, please! Talk to us! Whatever it is, we can figure a way out."
"Stop worrying about it, Rose. Just go back home. I don't want you guys to see me in a few."
Blood involuntarily spilled out from my mouth.
It's starting...
"Raven!"
Rose started to get out of the car and head towards me. In desperation, I decided to run the light and increase my speed, just to be safe.
My new strategy didn't work out so well, considering that they are hot on my trail. Bumper to bumper. The more I increased my speed, the closer they got. I tried taking shortcuts, running lights, and ducking and dodging between other cars, but it was almost as if both cars were attached like magnets.
Now going 80 miles per hour, I zipped into the outskirts of the city. Rose and Reign are still behind me.
Red and blue lights flash in the air. I looked in my rearview mirror, and now a couple of cop cars are adding themselves to the chase.
Who the hell called the cops?
I can't let them see me at this point in time.
With what feels like the weight of the world running behind me, I finally approached the bridge that separates the village from the rest of the society.
I looked back in the rearview mirror when I saw one of the cops leaned out of the car, pulled out his gun, and shot one of the back tires of my car, causing me to swerve out of control and crash on the bridge. I fell out of the front window and rolled along the middle of the bridge.
I barely managed to stand and limped closer to the village, with blood and glass covering my clothes and body.
It's almost over...
"RAVEN!"
I turned around and saw Rose, Reign, and the cops running towards me when they suddenly froze in their tracks, with a terrified look in their face. I turned back and saw the same wall of golden eyes staring at us creepily.
"What the hell are those?" One of the cops scaredly asked.
"My new community," I softly said.
*beep* *beep* *beep*
*beep* *beep* *beep*
I looked down at my watch and saw that it was 7:00 p.m. on the dot as I bled out some more blood in my mouth and my nose.
"...dad?" Reign spoke, producing a tear down his face. "What's happening to you?"
"A new beginning," I responded. "I didn't want you all to see me like this, but you're about to witness something no one else outside of this village has ever seen before."
"Raven...please...come back home with us...," Rose spoke with tears in her eyes. "We love you...let's go back to the life we used to have before all of this mess..."
"It's too late for that. This is what I've been dreaming of for months and this is the price that I will pay as long as the both of you are able to live the luxurious life...for me. It sucks I won't live to see it, but, hey, the things we want in life are worth the trouble, right?"
I turned back towards the village, got on my knees, and stretched my arms out.
A tear of pure joy and pure bliss rolled down my face as I closed my eyes, feeling my mouth expand beyond possibility and fingers climbing upwards in my throat.
